The AECP Level 2 course called Color Your Day was a great
course and provided some good inspiration for color choices. I sometimes struggle to decide what colors to
put together and I also tend to go back to the same color combinations I have
used in the past. So, the yellows,
oranges and greens of the world tend to get left behind.
For today’s project, I decided to use the Color wheel to
pick my colors and then use the 70-20-10 rule (but somewhat loosely). But first, the color choices.
Since I know that I tend not to use yellow and orange, I decided
that one of my colors would be either yellow or orange. Then looking at the color wheel, I came up
with orange, violet and green as a triad of color. I decided my background and
small flowers would be violet, my leaves would be green and my flower (which became
flowers) would be orange. My intention
was that violet would be 70%, orange 20% and green would be 10%......but let’s
see what happens.
I started with my flowers and leaves. I reviewed the layering chart included with
the Altenew
Build-A-Flower: Coral Charm Stamp &
Die Set. I stamped my outlines and
then began layering my flower and then my leaves using my stamping platform. I used orange tones for the flower and green
for the leaves. As I was inking my first
layer for the flower, I somehow had black streaks on one side. It took me a moment to figure out I had a
little black ink on the side of my stamping platform and had rubbed my ink pad
against it. So, I had to create another
flower, but I did not throw this one away……maybe we’ll have 2 orange flowers.
After my stamping, I die cut the large flowers and the
leaves. The small flower bunches, I
colored with Copic markers and then fussy cut those. I did use an exacto knife on a craft cutting
mat to cut out some areas in the center where my scissors could not get to.
Next, I found my background paper in the Altenew Dreamy
Sunset Paper Pack. It has some great
embossed looks in the background. I cut
it down to 4 x 5 ¼”. Then I began laying
out my flower, leaves and small flower bunches.
This is when I decided to use 2 orange flowers (and now my orange is
much more than 20%.......getting closer to being the dominant 70% actually. I glued all pieces down except the top flower
which I put on foam tape. As a side
note, the top flower covers the black streaks of the lower flower!!
I do like these colors together and I now have my Color
Wheel laying right on my desk and ready to use when I am stuck on what colors
to use.
Happy Crafting!
